This peculiar looking hill is visibly, a dome shaped rock just on the Parys side of Vredefort.                                                             (1.5 km before entering the town) What appears to be a dome is infect a giant ball and can be simulated by burying a tennis ball in sand leaving only the top edge of the ball uncovered and visible.  What you see here is a meteor that impacted the earth millions of years ago and was rated as a world heritage site in 2005.  This is however not the point of impact as many people think when they first visit the dome, but rather the point of "exit" from the earth's surface.  This giant rock struck the earth some 20km from where it now rests entering the surface of the earth at a place now called "Inland Sea"  the largest lake in South Africa.  The site here at Vredefort is the place where the meteor re-emerged.
