 Middelburg is perfectly situated midway between Gauteng and the Garden Route on the (N9), between Durban and Cape Town on Route (56) and between Port Elizabeth and Gauteng. A town in between - The distance between Graaff-Reinet and Colesberg 300km. Therefore it was decided to found a town in between. This is a land where ancient history, modern technology & the infinite universe join in harmonious accord. The area is recognized for its herbal plant life that grown naturally in the fields, and is also one of the few, and best, places in the world where fossil life have been discovered, as well as San rock art in caves from the first known human inhabitants, the San Bushmen. Local artists, leather crafts, pure woolen products and herbal medicines all display their products in shops in town. Historical sight worth seeing: Market square, Gereformeerde Kerk, Burger Monument and many more. Come back to nature and discover your soul in the heart of the "Karoo". Middelburg is fast becoming a global hang gliding destination, having hosted the South African Hang Gliding Championships in 2004. The hot air thermals and unrestricted airspace is of the best in the world for hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. |
