Heart of the Whale Route               Situated in the heart of the Cape Whale Route, only 120km from Cape Town, Hermanus, with its champayne air and mild climate offers a myriad of attractions to visitors.  It has grown from a rustic fisherman's village to being acknowledged by the World Wide Fund for Nature as  one of the twelve best whale-viewing sites in the world.  Here the eco tourist can have the unique experience of watching whales spy-hopping, breaching and lobtailing from the cliff paths or take a whale watching boat trip to come up really close and personal with the Southern Right whales that frequent the shores of Hermanus between June and December.  In the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, nature lovers can go for hikes among the 1 100 different species of Fynbos or go bird watching along the Klein, Bot, and Onrus Rivers or along the beaches where the endangered oystercatcher breeds.                                                         Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein) is a town with 25,308 inhabitants on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous as a place from which to watch whales during the southern winter and spring and is a popular retirement town. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre from as early as June. They were once hunted locally, but are now protected. The Old Harbour Museum contains several exhibitions which explain the whaling history of Hermanus.
