Ashton
Tourism Bureau |
Ashton
was originally known as Roodewal. The English speaking official who was in
charge of the railway station built there could not cope with the name
Roodewal, so he named the station after his home town in England. The station was built in 1887 and grew into a town only in the 1940s after the
Langeberg Cooperation was established near the station. Summer
days are sunny, the nights
are cool. Winters are cold and frosty. Ashton offers wine, fruit, race
horses and is a truly bountiful place. Ashton,
is situated about 10km outside Montagu, in the Breede river valey, at the
foot of the Langeberg mountains and set amongst lush vineyards and verdant
orchards. Ashton is ideally
suited to explore this beautiful region. Visitors
will discover our wildflower nature garden, bird sanctuaries,
nature reserves, museums, art galleries, historic homes, lovely hiking
trails, 4x4 and mountain bike trails and ideal rock climbing
opportunities. |
